Presidents Christmas Message
To Fellow Members Past and Present, Families, Friends and Supporters of Coolangatta SLSC,
On behalf of the Management committee may I wish all the “Compliments of the Season .”..a safe, healthy and happy festive season and may the new year prove to be a success....and all that you dream and plan for the year ahead.
As we share with our families the spirit of Christmas, it is also a time to reflect on the achievements of the year to date of both personal and business/career including students completing primary, secondary and tertiary education.
It is also a time to plan & prepare for the Future and the year ahead.
May I take this opportunity to thank all members and officers for their contribution in the successful running of the Club to date.
Sure there have been some obstacles on the way however, many more positives than negatives.
To all new award achievers, trainers, competitors (wearing the red, white and blue with pride) and most of all our front line people on the beach,
Our Beach Patrol Members..... well done!
It is a busy time of year with Family commitments and holidays and where we call on volunteers to assist on those Christmas day Rosters and those extra duties therefore, to those that can assist I offer my sincere appreciation.
Our first priority is maintaining a safe surfing beach.
Our sincere best wishes to our sponsors and the Supporters Club for without their financial assistance it would be impossible to operate our club.
To the Manager & Staff thank you. You are a credit and set a bench mark for our Surf Life Saving Association Supporters Clubs.
As I sit down to collect my thoughts and put pen to paper, it really is a very significant year and a milestone in Coolangatta SLSC’s history.
Whilst it may seem a little self indulgent, I feel compelled to note a few brief points and trust it may be of interest to members and a reason to celebrate.
50 years of continuous service patrolling Coolangatta Beach!...First Official Patrol Christmas Day 1959.

SLSQ ...100 years of Service!
The Wonderful State of Queensland ...150 years Celebrations!
For me personally, it is a special time to reflect on the development and achievements of our Surf Life Saving Club .
The many, many members, families and long lasting friendships developed over that period since 1959.
The memories, the experiences...what a journey!!
To witness the development of the Club and Members in their personal, sporting, family and business/careers has been a privilege and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful community organisation and trust that in some small way to have helped make a difference.
To also witness the development of the association to meet the demands of our modern society, the extra responsibility of public liability laws and how it has demanded a more sophisticated approach to the management and governance of our Clubs, The creation of the nipper association and involvement of women into our movement ...all major changes to our movement however, all for the betterment of the association.
I particularly enjoy seeing the development of our Nippers and Juniors watching the minors overcome their fear of water, learning surf and water skills and hopefully helping to develop their life skills. They are the future of the community and the Club.
The mums and dads, the family participation and the small hard core behind the scenes “make it happen” workers is greatly appreciated and is so important to the long term future of the movement.
Why do we join?
Is it to save lives?
Is it to make friends?
Is it to be part of a valued community service/network?
Is it be fit and healthy?
Is it to be part of a tribe?
Is it to have fun?
....perhaps all of these .......a shared Attitude ! .......a can do attitude !!
On this note may I recommend a visit to website www.slscando.com.au and the message from our SLSA CEO Brett Williamson OAM, “ New Initiative from Surf Life Saving”.
May I suggest that we adopt the same approach and link the Message to our Club for its ongoing development....where we have come from, where we are going and where do we what to go.
Can you help write the next chapter?......... Can do!
Suggest we adopt the slogan, Coolie can do or The Gatta can do!
Have a safe and wonderful Christmas,
Jim Purdon
President
