The History of Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club

On the 28th of November, 1958 a public meeting was held in the Council Chambers at Coolangatta for the purpose of forming a Surf Life Saving Club to patrol Coolangatta Beach. The club became affiliated with Point Danger Branch and Surf Life Saving Australia in February 1959 and patrols commenced Easter of that same year.
During the latter part of the 1959 season the members of the club were housed in a tin shed behind Neilsen's Chemist Shop. This contributed to the loss of a significant number of members for the 1959/60 season. Recruiting members for the club was difficult. Alot of hard work in this regard was done in the Coolangatta area but most of the new members came from Brisban
e.

Fundraising has always been an important activity in the club. During the Club's infancy years this activity was a prority. Club patrolling members had many years of long treks to the beach carrying heavy equipment and longer trips back. On many occasions the members carried the patrol equipment a distance of approximately 2 kilometres. The opening of the club's first Clubhouse, 'Alcatraz', located behind the Croquet courts in Goodwin Park was truly inspirational.
Membership drives and fundraising events continued earnestly with the new members recruited from Brisbane came the representation from every Brisbane Rugby League Club. The rivalries were legendary but the friendships created have long endured.

During these early years Coolangatta beach had a bad reputation for the presence of sharks and a strong northerly sweep. It was regarded as quiote dangerous to swim and those who dared, were considered to be foolish. Most weekends, up until the shark meshing of the beaches beagn it was not uncommon to have a dozen or more shark alarms at the Club. As a result of members vigilance and service to the community Coolangatta Beach has never had a shark attack.Despite an inauspicious beginning the Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club has over the years gained recognition.
The club continued to grow in reputation. Members of the Club today continue to stand tall.
We are proud to boast that Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club has never had a fatality. Our members are united as one in providing an unselfish service to the community.
The Coolangatta Beach, our beach, is your beach.
